Extensive collection of 2,820 letters and 566 postcards addressed to Henry Edwards. Letters were written by 289 individuals from 24 countries, especially Australia, Canada, and England. Edwards exchanged insects extensively, chiefly Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) and Coleoptera (beetles), and many letters deal with these exchanges. Some correspondents sent Lepidoptera to be identified by Edwards, asking him to name and describe any specimens that might prove to be new. Some letters from specialists request additional information to aid with publications. As editor of "Papilio," he received many letters with reference to the publication. The bulk of the correspondence (1,021 letters and postcards) is from William H. Edwards, lepidopterist, and contains much information on his entomological activities, as well as requests for Henry Edwards' opinions and information. Other entomologists represented by a quantity of letters and postcards include James Behrens, 1867-1887; Ezra T. Cresson, 1870-1888; Hermann A. Hagen, 1874-1888; Joseph A. Litner, 1876-1886; A.S. Packard, Jr., 1869-1890; Charles V. Riley, 1877-1891; S.H. Scudder, 1867-1890; John Bernhard Smith, 1881-1891; F. Herman Strecker, 1869-1875; and Richard H. Stretch, 1869-1885.
